This is a funny book for serious times. Mashed through the author´s unconventional, sometimes twisted, filter some of the problems of our age lurch disturbingly into view…and together they make for quite a sight. From Corona, through to Brexit, via political corruption and excellent regional beer, Goodnight Drinks is a collection of stories that will move you to hot, acrid cackles and horrible, soggy tears. Through all heinous machinations, the bizarre fetishes, subtle twists and general absurdity, however, one feature shines through: the human spirit, in all its indomitable oddness.
This first collection of short stories is an examination of the human condition and boasts a cast of characters both dastardly and delightful, in equal measure. The often satirical collection spans continents and genres, touching on every day and taboo topics with the same humour and warmth. From sex-addicted octogenarians to metamorphosing financial risk assessors, the full gamut of human eccentricity is laid bare. Sometimes scathing, often tender, these stories will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
A wonderful collection that actually improves with every read. Well, so far, anyway. I'm on the tenth read and it's still improving. I'll let post back here when the returns start to diminish.
This is a very enjoyable read. It is an unusual collection of short stories some very dark, some very funny, some both. The stories show many insights into the uniqueness of the human condition. The collection gets a recommendation from me.
A brilliant first collection that impressively assembles a range of different voices, peopled with characters whose stories you want to know. It is writing that is, at turns, moving, honest, funny, and always thoughtful and interesting. From satires of new age capitalist gurus, through tender portraits of people isolated by circumstance, heart-warming connections across nationalities and generations, and unexpected turns that keep you guessing, there's something for everyone here. If you value stories full of wit, empathy and intelligence, you're in for a treat.
