“It’s alright, you’re at Hazelgrove, you’re safe here.”
But Hazelgrove is crumbling. Its future looks bleak. Oliver should feel lucky to be living in a stately home, but the roof leaks and there isn’t enough money for repairs. He has learned that people bring problems so he doesn’t welcome Rachel’s intrusion into his life.
Perhaps her enthusiasm for Hazelgrove will inspire him to look at things differently.
They are not the only ones who need a fresh start and the kindness of strangers: a gardener desperate to provide a future for his autistic son; an eccentric gamekeeper haunted by the past; a neglected child; a failed businessman; a cook risking everything for what she believes.
Each of them needs to recover from trauma but if they can recognise a second chance when it is offered and be brave enough to take it then maybe they can save Hazelgrove and save themselves.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
A thoroughly enjoyable novel with a sweep of relatable characters, and a satisfying conclusion. The separate sections devoted to the main characters were refreshing, as they differed in style, added pace and gave voice to the main characters' attitudes. They also allowed the author to play with time to enhance the dramatic tension. This is a saga in the making, surely there will be sequel ? I hope so!
This was a most enjoyable read! The layout was different to my usual choice of fiction, but I found this format easier to pick up and put down without losing the thread. The characters were engaging even the ones I didn’t care for. What happens next in this country home? Can’t help feeling that there are many more opportunities out there!
