Abraham Barachin, a penniless young silversmith found himself in Hull after a chance encounter with a stranger in a church in Paris during the late 17th century, The stranger told him a bizarre story about the need to return some silver pieces belonging to his late wife who had hailed from England. Abraham settled in Hull and made a good life for himself. There are very few verifiable facts about his life.
Over three hundred years later, Clare Cartwright was living alone with the cats that once belonged to her daughter who had long since flown the nest. She was trying to put herself together again having been widowed. In an effort to regain some normality in her life, she revived an old interest and purchased a small piece of 17th silver which had been made in Hull. She then discovered something alarming about it and spent the next few years researching it, with spectacular results. Her search took her to Hull, where, previously, she had had no reason to visit. To distract her from her grief, a friend suggested a holiday which took them to St Petersburg, Moscow, Riga and Amsterdam. In each of these place Clare found connections to 17th century Hull
