Benedict Miller is a humble Poole fisherman in love with his sweetheart, Alice, the daughter of a street preacher. But Benedict is seized by the Naval pressgang and taken to fight in sea battles against the French. He tries to escape but is recaptured. He will spend 3 years away from his sweetheart who is distraught by his absence and flees to Wimborne Minster to live amongst the Romany Gypsies and escape from her overbearing father.
While at sea Benedict shows great courage and is promoted to the ranks. However, his concern for his love and his disabled parents, cause him to flee and seek a way back home. After being captured once more he finds himself involved in yet another naval battle and nearly loses his life. Close to death he is rescued and nursed back to health.
But will he be able to return to his home shores and be re-united with Alice?
And if he can return, there is also one further great surprise awaiting him there.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
An engaging historical tale with strong characters and an authentic maritime setting. A great read for anyone who enjoys stories of courage, love, and perseverance.
An engaging historical adventure This was a very enjoyable read. The naval scenes are particularly vivid and give a strong sense of the dangers sailors faced during that era. At the same time, the love story between Benedict and Alice adds a touching human element. A good choice for readers who enjoy historical novels with a mix of action and romance.
A powerful story of love and courage What I enjoyed most about this book was the way the author balances adventure with emotion. Benedict’s struggles at sea and his determination to return home to Alice make for a truly moving narrative. The historical setting feels authentic, and the writing makes it easy to picture life during this period. It’s a story about resilience, loyalty, and hope against the odds.
A gripping historical story Chris Bulteel has written a compelling historical novel that captures the hardship and bravery of life at sea in the late 17th century. Benedict Miller is an engaging and sympathetic character, and his journey from humble fisherman to naval sailor pulled me in from the very beginning. The emotional thread of his love for Alice adds warmth and depth to the story, while the naval battles and historical setting keep the pace exciting. A very enjoyable read for anyone who appreciates historical fiction with heart.
Having read his work and knowing his history as a Mayor and Sheriff in Dorset, it’s wonderful to see how he weaves local heritage into his fiction. He truly honors the spirit of the region.
