A Surgeon’s Lifetime spans about 80% of the time since the creation of the NHS. It gives a wide perspective that the hugely more specialised current generation of surgeons would struggle to emulate. Everyone believes that the world as it was when they were a young adult is ‘normal’. It is important that practicing doctors (and everyone else) realise that their view of ‘normal’ is just a snapshot along a continuum of change and possibly not a very good one at that. As well as showing many great advances in surgery over forty years, this book draws clear attention to some important, often less tangible, things that have been lost. Those in control would do well to read and consider. Fascinating
