Crime and Thrillers
The Man from Carcassonne is dark psychological fiction at its best, combining charismatic characters with atmospheric settings, to reveal the secret world of a psychopath. Set in the cities of Carcassonne, Toulouse, and Paris, the story follows the life of fractured child, Hugo, as he becomes a man; his psyche twisted by events over which he has little control. With echoes of Patrick Süskind's Perfume, this dark novel is far more than the usual multiple-murder thriller. Duval writes with unashamed frankness about the depravity of the human condition, refusing to be silenced and drawing the reader into a desperate world where justice is everything, no matter the price.
The Man from Carcassonne will appeal to readers interested not only in the act of murder and the psychopath that commits it, but in the often-untold tale of human frailty that lies beneath. Volume two to follow.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
This was a fast paced and tense novel with a great premise and well written characters. I became drawn in to this pretty quickly and invested in the outcome. I loved the style of writing and thought this was a great start to the series. Original review: https://www.netgalley.co.uk/book/198944/review/564829
Really enjoyed reading the book from this new author. Easy to read and never dull. Has been a long time since I had a book that I didn't want to end. Can't wait for a follow up. Feel the story could be serialised for TV. Unsettling at times but true to life.
This book is an amazing insight into the mind of a young boy who has no control over the events that then make him a man. How Hugo responds is in part due to the way he was treated and although not an excuse for the action he takes against those he believes are guilty, it is the basis of understanding why he does this. I truly enjoyed this book and cannot wait until Volume 2 is released and we find out how life treats Hugo, Eric, Fathers Paul and Hal as Hugo gets older.
I really enjoyed this book. An intelligent exploration of a damaged mind. Will be looking forward to part 2. Highly recommended.
