Celebrating the release of Eleanor Anstruther’s new satirical novel, ‘In Judgement of Others’, Troubador members Chloé Messinger and Jessica Woodward journeyed to John Sandoe Bookstore in London to join in on the launch. The event set the stage for an evening of celebration, connection, and reflection on the powerful themes explored in Eleanor’s darkly satirical tale of psychosis.

The Story Behind the Book

‘In Judgement of Others’ follows the journey of Tessa who, while cast in the aptly-named MADS (Midhurst Amateur Dramatic Society) production of Noël Coward’s ‘Blithe Spirit’, is hospitalised and sectioned following a psychotic episode.

Anstruther, in her darkly comic sensibilities, empathetically explores the complexities of how we treat - and don’t treat - mental illness, a topic that couldn’t be more prevalent today. The book challenges perceptions, offering an unsettling yet honest look into the stigmas faced by those experiencing mental health crises as well as those around them.

Venue to Match the Book’s Essence

John Sandoe Books was the perfect venue to host Eleanor’s book launch. An iconic bookshop nestled on one of the many quiet streets of Chelsea, the venue’s beautiful eighteenth-century premises and intimate atmosphere helped bring a sense of togetherness, whilst the cosy space felt like the ideal place to celebrate the launch of such thought-provoking work.

Troubador’s Production Team

Entrusted to one of Troubador’s Production Controllers, Beth Archer, the novel was taken from manuscript to finished product with great care. The self-publisher’s Junior Designer, Chloé Messinger, who was lucky enough to see her work in the flesh, was assigned to the creation of the book’s cover. As every author knows well, the process of getting from first word to first print is a long voyage, which makes it all the more special for the Troubador team to be a significant chapter in it.

A Sense of Togetherness

The event fostered a strong sense of pride among attendees, reflecting how meaningful the launch was to Eleanor. It became clear that it wasn’t just a celebration of the book itself. Rather, it was a tribute to the collective effort that brought ‘In Judgement of Others’ together, as well as the ever-important themes of mental health that are at its core.

For Eleanor herself, it seemed like it was a night of reflection and gratitude - a celebration of not just her work, but of the community that supported her along the way.

As for the Troubador team, it was rewarding for us to see the book get the recognition and limelight it deserves. It was lovely to raise a glass of champagne to Eleanor! We wish her every success.
