Middle Grade
From the darkness… came a call from the trees. Deep in the soul of the world a being is growing, feeding on the destruction of the natural world. The Forgetting is seeping through the Rings of Time, bringing dark rain, poisoned mists, and deep fractures in the earth. The Rings are nearing collapse, the Ancient Tree Council needs help.
Escaping the torment of his neighbours, the twins, Jack runs to the woods and the Ancient Tree Council see their chance, Jack is their hope. They ask him and his scruffy dog Stan to undertake a dangerous journey to help restore balance, to bring about a remembering. To Jack's horror, the trees mistakenly bring Mia, one of the twins and their lives are entwined in a way they could never have anticipated.
The adventure takes them beyond their wildest imaginings, meeting wise elders, facing tempestuous primal worlds, turbulent rivers, and a mighty storm - with near tragic consequences. Discovering strength, friendship, belonging and hope. A thrilling adventure to the heart of the earth.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
“Thrilling quest to heal the World by 2 sparky children and Stan the dog!” Heartwarming magical tale as Jack and Mia race to save an ailing planet. Being different - which has to caused Jack to be bullied - is in fact his superpower as he is called on by the Tree Council to help them Heal the World. A wonderful cast of characters including talking animals and a network of trees and funghi race to restore the Earth's balance. Junior age children will love this fast paced adventure beautifully balanced with action, environmental information and a good smattering of humour.
Dione Orrom does a fantastic job in writing this book, it had that fantasy element going on with this story. The concept worked with what I wanted in a fantasy world and that the characters were wonderfully written. It does a fantastic job in telling the story that it needed to and worked overall. I hope to read more from Dione Orrom as I really enjoyed this.
“Such a beautiful, uplifting book” I bought this for my son who loves nature and also easily gets lost in fantasy books. The Remembering offers the best of both worlds: it manages to be mystical as well as grounding. I read it too and loved the idea that trees share their wisdom and important messages about protecting the planet are so carefully whispered. It's such a gentle but important book. Beautiful.
This is a great book for kids, I don't know from which age writing speaking because English is not my first language, but as content goes I would say middle grade could be perfect. This book meshes grief, bullying, climate crisis in a way that does not come out heavy. Regarding the style and the atmosphere, it reminds me of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, and this is very much a plus. link : https://www.netgalley.co.uk/catalog/book/397288
I was really drawn to this book both visually and from the blurb. The cover is so stunning it is very ground d in natur and also has a folklore type look to it. The blurb promised much the same, with a great connection to the woodland surroundings and what seems to be a lesson to t ach, so we dove in, with me reading this to my eldest. I am so glad we did, for one because my daughter was dealing with being bullied and this book made her understand that she is not alone in that and that bullies are mean, but often are lost and confused. The book is also connected to nature and it's importance and we are huge outdoor lovers and advocates for the earth, so we enjoyed that aspect of the book as well. The journey was a lot of fun and we liked talking about everything we read and all the wee parts of the adventure. It is a very lovely read and definitely great to read to younger children or for approximately 8 years olds to read themselves.
