The Wishing Shelf Book Awards Editorial Review
‘A delightfully illustrated ‘animal’ story, perfect for 6 – 9 year olds – particularly if they love music! Highly recommended!’ The Wishing Shelf REVIEW I must say, this is a very sweet story for 6 – 9 year olds from the pen of talented writer, Faiz Kermani. Helped along by Korey Scott’s colourful artwork, it’s the story of a young frog, Gravelpants, and his formidable musical talents. In fact, he’s so good, he might – just might – be capable of saving the Stagnant Pond Music Club and restoring it to its glory days. There were a LARGE number of elements to this book I enjoyed. Firstly, I loved all the songs the writer came up with; and I can imagine lots of young readers will not only find the lyrics amusing, they’ll enjoy singing along too! Secondly, there’s a good flow to the writing style; there’s plenty of speech (which kids love), and the vocabulary is highly accessible. And thirdly, the story is well-plotted in as much as it’s unpredictable, evenly paced, and the ending is FAB! So, all you grandparents and parents out there hunting for a slightly wacky, wonderfully fun story filled with lots of memorable and sweetly named characters (Twigbobble, Cannonball Bullfrog, Stinky Toad), I’m happy to recommend The Secret of Stinky Toad to you. I think most children will enjoy the adventure, and they’ll be rooting for the characters to prevent Stagnant Pond Music Club from shutting. There’s even a nice ‘never give up on your dreams’ message in the story too. All in all, a delightful read! A ‘Wishing Shelf’ Book Review www.thewsa.co.uk
