I studied English at Nottingham University as a mature student. Having gained a degree, I found freelance work with magazines. Having stories, articles and copywriting published gave me the confidence to continue developing my ideas for fiction.
WOOD Taller, Older, Wiser is the result of one of those ideas: A breathing partnership between a boy and a tree. What sort of boy would that be? (A socially reluctant one). What sort of tree? (An honest Oak, Quercus rober).
Humour tends to creep into my writing even when I’m not expecting it to. I like the rhythm of words and intriguing names and phrases. Sometimes a heartwarming scene will turn up and surprise me. WOOD is aimed at children in middle grade (6-96 isn’t a category option). Trees grow alongside us all our lives, but it’s easy to take them for granted. Patrick Wood doesn’t.
