Young adult
Pie is a cheerful, cheeky boy with a lust for life and love of nature, especially birds. Always on the lookout for fun and adventure, he roams the farms, beaches and woodlands around his Scottish home, a cottage by the sea.
Growing up in World War 2 isn’t easy though and, with his father away at war, who can help him solve his problems? His big brother, Tom, is too busy. The school janitor, Janny Jangles, is too grumpy. The headmaster Mr MacMerry isn’t the least bit merry and that leaves Mr Bain, the stylish storyteller.
Then there are the women in Pie’s life. Mother, firm but fair. Big sister Sissy, half nanny, half partner in crime. The triplet Aunts, feisty but fun. Last but not least is chief chicken advisor and layer of extra eggs, Foxy, in Cluckingham Palace. Can they help?
Things finally come to a head when Pie meets Peter, a young German prisoner of war. Everything Pie thought he knew about the enemy is turned upside down.
When the war ends and Pie’s father returns home, surely things will get easier, or will they?
