Middle Grade
Tom and Alice Froston have finally been reunited with their mother in Yorkshire after escaping wartime France with RAF pilot Pete Bridgeman. When their wounded father returns from Dunkirk, they try to resume ordinary life as Britain braces for invasion.
But during a visit to an airfield, the children glimpse the growing Battle of Britain and meet French officers Captain Legrand and Lieutenant Capito. Suspicion begins to arise when Tom and Alice witness a mysterious parachute drop.
Fred Grimlow, a local publican, appears near the landing site and Captain Legrand is asking a lot of questions about who helped the children in France, who can they trust?
Although their father warns them away, the children decide to start their own investigations, uncovering strange signals, covert visits to the library, black-market dealings, and coded messages. The more they investigate, the more they begin to suspect Grimlow and Capito of espionage. Their courage, curiosity, and experiences in France draw them into a dangerous struggle, where appearances deceive and important secrets could threaten Britain’s defences.
