In 1982, The Original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company was coming to the end of a landmark three years. These three years would be the companies last. During this time, John Coates had the great joy of watching the Company perform.
There Was a Time... tells of John’s personal travels around the Theatres of Britain during this thirty-month period, interwoven with tributes to a number of the Company’s very fine artistes of that time. Alongside this are excerpts from his study of The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company Archive, and the trials and tribulations that faced those at the performing and administrative helms of the Company during a bittersweet final period in its great theatrical history.
When the Original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company closed in 1982, for lovers of The Savoy Operas of innocence and charm, the untimely demise of the century long custodians of these unique works was both crude and abrupt, allowing an important piece of Britain’s Theatrical Heritage to inexcusably perish.
