History, Politics & Society
Three Women, a Rabbi and a Musician From Bohemia explores the lives of members of a Jewish family who lived in rural Bohemia for over two hundred years, from early in the 18th century.
It follows:
Three incredibly strong women forced to bring up their families on their own following the early deaths of their husbands.
The rabbi who, after living in Vienna, moved back to Bohemia, helping other family members on the way.
The musician who survived being bayoneted in Serbia in World War One, and then moved to Berlin where he fell in love with a ballerina.
The threat of the Nazi invasion also led to some fascinating stories of escape, survival and renewal in new countries, especially for the author’s parents and his older siblings. One cousin journeyed East through Russia to Shanghai and another arrived in Palestine as a teenager, eventually becoming an expert in cultivating bananas.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
A superb insight into how to conduct research into your family tree and learn about your own history. Mike has brilliantly merged the story of his search with stories about his ancestors and social history through the last 200 years. Well done Mike, a very good read.
I was recommended this book as an insight into social history in Europe over the past 200 years and I must say it is brill. Loved reading it.
As a keen genealogist and having compiled my own family tree it was amazing to see how with enough research, characters and history this can be turned into a book. Mike’s research into his ancestors has certainly achieved this even through the darkest periods in his, and his families history. I highly recommend this book, especially for those that are interested in the social history of the Jewish people in Bohemia.
This book is a tremendous read and I thoroughly recommend it. Mike has explained how he carried out his research on his family tree and combined it with a social history of the last 250 years in Bohemia, the land of his forefathers, together with personal recollections of many of the family. Once you start reading it, it is one of those books that is difficult to put down.
