Historical
Dr John Webster, Alchemist, Astrologer, writer and Physician, after having been hounded by enemies and involved in early actions of the English Civil War, hopes his adventures are over as he arrives back at his home in the small market town of Clitheroe, He wants nothing more than to return to his library and experiments, but it is not to be. He continues to be drawn back into the ravages of the war in the North.
Though a Parliamentarian through and through, Webster is forced to assist the Royalist Army of Prince Rupert of the Rhine as it ploughs its way through Lancashire and Yorkshire. Pulled from his home, along with his young assistant, Nate, and servant Cas, he finds himself in a world of intrigue, poison, spies and counterspies, whilst dealing with the medical needs of an army on the move. Finding vital information of use to Parliamentary forces and with help from a most unexpected source, he must try to escape and warn his friends.
With a character based on that of the real John Webster (1610-82), little-known but a figure of national importance, and with maps and images following the action, this story embraces the real events of that terrible year of conflict, 1644.
