Fantasy and Horror
Maud: Heirs to a Broken Age is an epic dark fantasy of gods, ruin, and redemption, set in a world where the sun has vanished and the dead do not rest.
Long ago, divine beings vanished into myth. Now, they awaken—stripped of memory, scattered across a frostbitten land ruled by silence and shadow. Undead giants roam broken villages, ancient fortresses lie buried beneath snow, and hope flickers like a dying flame. Among mortals, survival is a ritual. Among gods, it is penance.
As forgotten powers stir, a handful of divine heirs gather, drawn by whispers of a lost brother and the creeping corruption infecting the land. Each step they take unearths old sins and awakens deeper mysteries: Why do the dead return every night? Who sealed the sky? And what is the price of reclaiming divinity?
Lyrical, dramatic, and emotionally powerful, Maud explores the blurred line between godhood and humanity, memory and myth. With richly layered characters and a world soaked in sorrow and wonder, this is a tale of fallen gods seeking to heal the land—one village, one soul at a time.
For readers who crave heart with their high fantasy, Maud offers a world you will not want to leave.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
For me, this book is something special. In a nutshell it's an epic story of Gods rediscovering themselves in a world that has become alien to them. But what a beautifully haunting world it is. This frozen landscape, though plagued by the undead, is far from barren and lifeless. It has so much heart flowing through it. From the townspeople banding together to fight and endure for another night, to the plants and animals finding ways to adapt and survive. The way this world and the people within are brought to life by L. L. Junior is an absolute pleasure to read. The atmosphere he creates is wonderful and his words really immerse you in Maud and it's story. The Gods themselves are not the all powerful gods you may think of that treat humans as playthings. Yes they have immense power, but are so very human themselves. They are imperfect and relatable, living through their own struggles and coming to terms with the aftermath of decisions they choose to make. They do not put themselves above, but alongside. They suffer, they celebrate, they love, they break, they learn and they grow. Together. Reading about their vulnerabilities with no attempt at hiding from their emotions and the support they have for one another was really powerful. I felt a genuine connection to these characters, showing that it's ok to fall apart. It's ok to cry. In reading about this family of Gods and their journey to find what they have lost, I've found something myself. I haven't actually read for a very long time (years), but through L. L. Juniors world he has created with his words I have rediscovered my love of reading and what a gift that is. I believe there is something in this book that all people can connect and relate to, as at its heart it's about a very real and very human struggle. It is hope in written form, with all the warts and blemishes of life in full view. I would encourage anyone with a love of fantasy, horror, emotional depth or truly just anyone that enjoys an amazing story to give the world of Maud a visit!
