When childless thirtysomethings Rob and Jenny Watts discover a baby in the kitchen of their elegant London home, they risk keeping him. With the help of an informant, investigative reporter, Rob, is on the case to discover the truth behind the baby's identity, his birth mother and why she chose them to take care of her child.
But things take a turn for the worse when they start to become haunted with anonymous cards and emails from a mysterious woman who they assume is the mother. And in their dream to build a loving family home for the child, who they name Joel, it becomes apparent that the boy has a darker side causing worrying behaviour.
Jenny employs an au pair to help as she struggles to deal with motherhood. Despite their best efforts, Joel's behaviour starts to tear the family apart.
