It only takes seconds for your life to change.
It’s said that everybody knows someone who is battling, or has battled, cancer. In a breathtakingly personal account, Tits Up is the story of how Carole Paterson underwent breast cancer treatment from start to finish. Carole was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer, which affects just 15% of patients. To keep her mind focused during treatment, she documented her journey day by day, to create an easy to read commentary on life as a cancer patient. Focusing more on the personal side, the book is written with the sole purpose of reaching other cancer patients with the message: you are not alone.
Taking the reader by the hand, Carole leads us through every stage of her treatment: chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy, including a daily diary during chemotherapy to share thoughts and worries as she progressed. While it doesn't make light of the diagnosis, the book attempts to find light in the darkness where it can by sharing some of the humorous moments Carole experienced, as well as wedding preparations, shielding through the pandemic, and her focus on the future. In the firm belief that knowledge is power, Carole hopes to give the newly diagnosed a wealth of information that could help to make their journey a little easier to navigate.
Companion, friend, advisor, shoulder, it's all of these and more. Intended to be a book that reaches into a nightmare and helps guide the way through, Tits Up is one that we hope we will never need, until we do. Brutally honest, and written with a blend of sensitivity and candour, Tits Up represents strength of spirit for both the author and the audience she is trying to reach.
Here's what readers have to say about this book....
I have just read this amazing book. I found it really enlightening and very honest. It is written in layman terms and is meant to help everyone who has a cancer diagnosis have an honest explanation of what to expect. From the physical treatments to how your mental health and normal day to day life are affected. There are also comments from Carole's husband, son and mother relating the impact it had on their lives too. There are some lighthearted moments too. I found it easy to read and strangely enjoyable as I felt as though I had been taken on a snapshot of the journey Carole had gone through. The diary showed the good, bad and ugly times that she went through. Thank you for sharing your journey so honestly that helps us all to have a better understanding of what may happen from the patients' perspective so that we can all be more supportive to anyone we know that has to endure this horrible disease. Best wishes to Carole and her family.
So up front, raw and honest. Nothing is sugar coated and takes the reader through the down to earth and practical day to day struggle with dealing with a life threatening diagnosis. The impact of your life and those of your close family and friends changing overnight and the harrowing journey of treatment is dealt with full on with the author's great sense of humour and sensitivity. Full of hope and good wishes for the author's continuing good health.
Tits Up is an excellent read. Filled with humour and wit, a powerful message is relayed to the reader about the harrowing effects cancer can have; not only on the host but on the surrounding family members, who's thoughts have also been put into words. Fortunately there is a well deserved happy ending for the writer, who clearly wants to make sure that others know the importance of checking your tits! The message has been read and understood by myself, who will be recommending this book to everyone I know.
I have started reading 'Tits Up' and it is the most perfect choice of book! I'm about 9 chapters in and it's such a great read with so many similarities to my own journey and experiences so far. Carole has done an amazing job of telling her story and should be immensely proud of how it resonates with other patients especially me.I have recommended it to other ladies in a breast cancer support group I am part of.
I bought this book because my wife has recently started her treatment. I wanted to understand more about what she might be going through in the future. I found it really interesting and informative. It's probably a bit too early for my wife to read it, but she intends to read it soon. It's not too heavy to read and in parts it's quite humorous which actually helps because it deals with some serious topics. Well worth a read for anybody in our situation.
