When Eloise, a young American girl, meets handsome Dr Thomas Norton in the boiling Boston summer of 1890 she believes herself to be in love. But Eloise soon finds herself in a desperate situation that could see her alienated from her family and all of Boston society.

With her maid and confidant, Rosie, she travels to Devon, England, where her life is changed forever. Forced to take a heartbreaking decision she returns to the USA where she tries to resume her previous life. But the trauma she has experienced threatens to deny her any future happiness until she finds love from an unexpected source.
